Mistake #1: Analysis Paralysis and never getting started

You have so many different ideas you could implement. It could be a new business, a side hustle, more product offerings, or other ways to grow your existing business. However, by being pulled in a million different directions (and between a million different ideas), you end up STUCK in your head and never truly get started.

Step #1: Pick A Pain Point


Think about your target customer (who you want to serve) and determine their one most pressing pain point where your business can have the greatest impact and truly make a difference for that customer. If you solve your target customer's biggest issue, they will have no problem paying you.

Mistake #2: Perfect Or Nothing

You get so wrapped up in the perfectionist mindset that you'll only release something into the world when you feel it's absolutely "perfect". In the time you take tinkering and tweaking, you could have already made huge progress AND money in your business.

Step #2: Test Something

Take what you've got, even if it's only an initial idea or a draft, and set up a test. This will help you identify where you're on the right track vs where you're totally off base. That way when it comes time to "perfect" something, you'll be perfecting a product or service that you already know will perform well in the marketplace.

Mistake #3: Believing You're Not Enough

You start overthinking and comparing yourself to everyone else and all the things they're doing in their businesses. You start to believe that you, your business, and your ideas are not and could never be good enough. This thinking keeps you frozen with no way to succeed because you self-sabotage and don't even fully try.

Step #3: Put Yourself Out There

Push through your fears by getting the support you need. It's SO IMPORTANT to have people in your corner who truly believe in you. Once your support system is in place, put your business, your products, and yourself out there! The world needs to know what you're offering so you can go from being on the sidelines to being in the winner's circle. Remember, you can't win if you're not even in the game.

Mistake #4: Brand, But No Business

I see this way too often, and I made this mistake myself when I first started Afara Global in 2011. I had a website, business cards even custom fonts and logos but no customers! I was doing the things I thought would make my business legit. I got caught up in how things appeared versus actually building the core of my business. So many small businesses fall into this same trap. It's super easy to get carried away with branding, websites, and social media, but not have an actual business, making real money behind all that fluff.

Step #4: Sell Like Crazy

Make sure you're selling, selling, SELLING. Some people are afraid of selling because they fear how they're going to be perceived. But the reality is, if you don't have customers, you don't have a business. If you truly believe in the value of your product or service to solve a pressing pain point for your target customer (remember Step #1?), then, of course, you want to share it with the world and get it in the hands of the people who need it most. You can't help people if you're afraid to share your product or service. Selling like crazy is really about serving like crazy!

Mistake #5: Making Every Win A Defeat

So often as high achievers (and I've been here too), we set such a high standard for everything we do and are absolutely too hard on ourselves. Regardless of the progress you make, it's never good enough. Your mind somehow turns every win into a defeat. This is demoralizing! It saps your energy, leaving you incapable of building momentum in your business. Moreover, it leaves you feeling like a failure, like you can't do anything right in your business.

Step #5: Celebrate & Iterate

Acknowledge every single thing that's working in your business and take the time to celebrate. Decide how you can do more of the things that work. Then, iterate! Identify what's not working in your business, analyze why it's not working, and come up with new strategies that you can test (remember Step #2?). Don't use the fact that something didn't work to beat yourself up. Take it as a learning opportunity because everything is a test. This attitude will help you keep the momentum going while continuing to learn and improve your business.
